Banyak hal yang kadang mengaburkan definisi virus komputer yang sebenarnya. Pemahaman yang benar sangat diperlukan terutama oleh kalangan awam. Tak jarang karena definisi yang terlalu dibesar-besarkan membuat orang sudah ngeri duluan untuk menghidupkan komputer. Apa itu virus komputer?

Virus computer adalah sebuah program kecil yang bisa menggandakan dirinya sendiri dalam media penyimpanan computer. Virus juga bisa langsung ataupun tak langsung, menginfeksi, mengkopi maupun menyebar program file yang bisa dieksekusi maupun program yang ada di ‘sektor’ dalam sebuah media penyimpanan. Virus juga bisa menginfeksi file yang tidak bisa dieksekusi (file data) dengan menggunakan macros. Intinya kemampuan menempel dan menulari pada sebuah program virus juga bukanlah suatu kecelakaan ataupun kelemahan perangkat computer karena pada dasarnya penulis virus kebanyakan jago menulis program computer.

Mengapa disebut virus?

Uji coba kemampuan mereplika diri sendiri virus secara umum pertama kalinya dimunculkan pada 1960 unyuk membuktikan sebuah teori yang ditulis pada 1949. Kata ‘virus’ itu sendiri baru digunakan pada 1984 oleh Professor Fred Cohen yang artinya suatu bentuk yang mampu mereplika dirinya sendiri. Virus computer baru muncul beberapa tahun kemudian sekitar tahun 1986-1987. Julukan virus untuk computer ini memang tepat karena adanya persamaan sifat yang dimiliki. Virus komputer seperti juga virus dalam dunia biologi sama-sama memiliki kemampuan untuk mereplika dirinya sendiri, sama-sama berukuran kecil dibanding korban yang diserang serta sama-sama butuh korban untuk tetap hidup.

Apakah dampak penularan virus?

Semua virus computer pada akhirnya selalu meminta bagian dalam ruang media penyimpan, sebagian lainnya malah menyita ruang yang tersisa pada memori untuk mempengaruhi kinerja komputer. sebagai tambahan beberapa virus juga dibuat unruk memunculkan dampak yang sangat buruk pada komputer korban hingga memacetkan kerja komputer serta merusak file yang lain. beberapa virus lainnya juga membuat kinerja memori jadi tidak stabil atau membuat beberapa aplikasi tidak dapat berjalan semestinya.Berapa virus yang dibuat sekitar 8-5 tahun lalu malah memang sengaja ditujukan untuk merusak file lain yang ada didalam media penyimpan.
